The United States monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank
The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Gathering of important financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
